Hungary has a long and exciting History of wine making. Grapes have been grown here since the 5th century, first planted by the Romans. The climate with warm summers and mild winters give ideal conditions for grape growing and wine production.

The Romans also founded the city of Pécs, one of Hungary´s oldest cities. In the 17th century when the Turks invaded the country, the people of Pécs dug them selves into the ground, thus creating a tunnel system all over the city. This tunnel system toady gives us an almost perfect storage facility for our sparkling wine.In the 1850´s the Litke family lived and worked in Pécs in the field of tailoring. The family had two sons, and the oldest went to France to learn the art of "haute couture".

While there, he was so fascinated by Champagne, and the production of this glorious wine, that upon returning to Hungary, he managed to persuade his father to start production of Sparkling wine according to the "Champagne Method", thus creating the first "House" for sparkling wine in Hungary.

The tunnel system of Pécs proved to be ideal for the storage of this wine. We today have 2 km of tunnel system on five levels where our sparkling wines rests, and matures just like its "cousins" in the Champagne district.
The Litke families reputation increased over the years, and their wines were sold all over Europe. In many cases to the Royal courts.

When Hungary was overtaken by the communists in 1956 the company ended up in state hands. For many years the only market was the Soviet market, and the state of the facility declined. When communism fell in 1989, the facility was in a poor state.

We took over in 1995, and over a few years invested substantially to bring the facility back to its prime. Today we have a top modern facility with a filling line both for sparkling and still wines.
